How Can You Prevent Cat Litter Tracking?

How can you prevent cat litter tracking in your home? Cats often track cat litter out of the litter box (also known as the litter pan). Some litters track more than others. Some cats also dig in the box and spill litter outside of the box. Cats with long fur or large paws often drag extra litter out with them as well. This can create lots of mess (and a gross chore) for cat lovers.

How can you reduce litter tracking? There are a couple things you can do.

1. Make it easy to vacuum and sweep around the box regularly. Keeping a small handheld vacuum or broom and dustpan nearby can take some of the work out of this chore.

2. Buy a deeper litter box. High sides can prevent litter from being kicked out of the box as a cat covers his or her waste.

3. Use a litter mat. These are made to help trap small bits of litter in your cat's paws as they exit the litter box and thus minimize tracking.

4. Consider changing your litter. Litters which are paper-based or made of large particles are less prone to tracking. Scoopable litters and clay litters track the most while pine, wheat, newspaper and silica generally have less.

I hope this information helps you reduce litter tracking in your home.
