How many babies (kittens) will my cat have?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – can you tell me how many babies will my cat have?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote asking – how many kittens will your cat have. I have no way to know that. Cats can have one to several kittens. The litter size in cats varies from one kitten to more than 10. Litter sizes are often smaller in young and old animals and largest when the mother is around three to four years of age.

Pregnancy can be diagnosed by palpation (by a veterinarian feeling the belly) after day 26 to about 35 days, by ultrasound after day 21 to 24, or radiograph (x-ray) after day 45.

An article that might be helpful to you is Pregnancy in Cats.

Best of luck!
