My Cat is dragging his rear legs

Our question this week was:

My male cat is 13-years-old and has recently been dragging his back 2 legs when he walks. His right leg seems worse, and his left doesn’t seem to be able to compensate. I have taken him to the vet and X-rays were done but revealed nothing (possible hairline fracture). I don’t know what to do next.

Answer

Hi Renee– thanks for your email. Your email said that your cat is dragging his rear legs. This really worries me.

There could be several problems including pelvic fracture, disc problems, spinal tumors, or a blood clot problem due to an underlying heart problem. All of these problems are serious.

An x-ray would show fractures but will not diagnose the other problems. He may need additional testing. I’d recommend that you talk to your veterinarian and if he cannot do the additional tests, he should be able to recommend someone that can.

Articles that might be helpful to you are Aortic Thromboembolism, Pelvic Fractures, and Intervertebral Disc Disease.

Best of luck!
