My cat that is having trouble getting adjusted to life without her companions?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – I recently moved my 3-year-old male cat into a new apartment after a divorce and I guess he is having a harder time than I thought with it. Not only did he leave behind a larger house for a smaller apartment but also my husband who he semi-liked and 2 dogs one of which he was best friends with. Is my cat hating the new environment or just missing his dog buddy? I’m torn… I want to keep him with me but if he is missing all the familiarities of my old home then I want to give him to my ex to keep. I want to do what’s best for the cat. He is acting very weird and keeping me up all night by meowing and such. What do you suggest?

Answer

Hi Carol– thanks for your email. I’m sorry to hear about your situation. You wrote that you recently moved to a small apartment after your divorce and took one cat – and your husband took the dogs – one of which your cat really liked. Your cat is vocalizing now and acting weird.

I’d say – give him time Carol. I think he will be fine. What you are describing is not unusual.

Eventually, if you think he’d like another cat – you could consider adopting a little female kitten. For now – give him time and attention. Make sure he has plenty of play time. Make sure he has some windows to look out and lots of love. Hopefully these things will help to stimulate his mind and keep his “busy”.

Best of luck!
