Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – my new cat needs his 1-year cat vaccines. These are her first vaccines. About 4 ½ weeks go she got her first set of shots. I was told to get a second set within 3 to 4 weeks from the first set. It has not been about 4 ½ weeks. Is it too late to get or second set? Or do I need to start her vaccines over?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email Danni. You wrote that your new cat had one set of vaccines and is late getting her second set.

The recommendation is that new adult cats receive a “set” of at least two shots to achieve immunization. The recommendation is to give an initial set and repeat in 3 to 4 weeks. Probably being late by a few days will be okay but I can’t say that with 100% certainty.

The safest thing to do is to repeat the vaccine set again.

Best of luck!
