What foods are taboo for my cats and kittens?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – What people foods are “taboo” for my cats/kittens? I was eating boiled peanuts and they were climbing all over me trying to get to the peanuts and the shells. I didn’t let them have them until I know it is safe.

Answer

Hi Cindy – thanks for your email. We have an article on Dangerous Foods for Cats that you should read. There is nothing in our foods that cats need. Most cats deal best with being fed a good quality cat food. There are several items such as chocolate, baking soda, baking powder, bones, alcohol, coffee, macadamia nuts, dairy products, etc. Please read the list.

I personally don’t know of anything toxic in boiled peanuts but there is nothing in them at they need. I’d worry mostly that if they eat the shells that it could cause a foreign body type reaction.

Best of luck!
