Why is my cat crying with her rear end up in the air?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – I have a cat we found in a parking lot at a local restaurant. She started crying last night and she doesn't seem to get comfortable. She lifts her rear end up in the air. She is indoors only. Seems to be eating and drinking okay. She is also using the litter box. What could be wrong?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email Gage. You wrote that your 1-year-old cat is crying and lifting her rear in the air. My first thought is… she in heat? Continue to encourage her to eat and drink well and monitor the litter box for abnormalities. Call your vet if she won't eat, is lethargic, vomiting or having diarrhea.

An article that might be helpful to you is The Heat Cycle of Cats. Please read this and see if this sounds like the heat behavior is consistent with what she is doing.

Best of luck!
