Why is my cat scratching her ear?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – My cat had been scratching and rubbing her left ear a lot. When she walks the left ear tends to go down. Also, the interior of the ear looks quite red and irritated, compared to the right one. What is wrong?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote that your cat has a red irritated ear that she is scratching. The most common causes of a red irritated ear an ear infection caused by ear mites, yeast or bacteria.

An article that might be helpful to you is “Ear infections in Cats“. I’d recommend that you take her to your vet for a proper diagnosis and then can then dispense the recommended treatment.

Best of luck!
