Does dog hair harbor bacteria?

Our question this week was:

A friend of mine frequently complains about the amount of dog hair that my Lab sheds and how it is a breeding ground for bacteria. The hair is on the bed, and on pillows, and other areas, and the concern is that bacteria is being spread from dog hair to humans. Is there any truth to this?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Bacteria can be anywhere and everywhere in our homes, with and without pets. Hair is a problem mostly because it sticks to clothes and can make a home appear "dirty" to some people. I have never heard that bacteria is spread from dog hair to humans and that being a significant problem.
