My 6 weeks old puppy’s gums are white

Our question this week was:

My 6 weeks old puppy's gums are white. Is that normal?

ANSWER

White gums are not normal. The gums are a mucous membrane and the color of them is a good indicator of blood perfusion and oxygenation. The normal gum color is pink. White gums can mean poor perfusion, anemia, or shock. Pale, white, blue or yellow gums are cause for concern and you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Best of luck!
