Make Your Dog a Plate This Thanksgiving: Dog-Friendly Holiday Foods
Thanksgiving is a time to come together as a family and celebrate all that we’re grateful for. This includes anyone you love and care for—and that means your pets!
Let your canine bestie enjoy their own Thanksgiving feast with these pup-friendly food items:
Serve Some Plain, Shredded Turkey
Shred up some turkey breast so your dog’s meal has an ample amount of protein. Be sure to leave the skin off because the fat can cause pancreatitis, and the seasonings can make them sick to their stomach. Make sure there aren’t any onions or garlic with the turkey, since these two foods are absolute no-no’s for dogs.
Always Include Veggies
Green beans and carrots are excellent choices for your dog to snack on. Like turkey, be sure to leave them both unseasoned. Cook down or cut up carrots to prevent choking, and only offer small amounts.
Save Some Leftover Apples
Dogs love apples—they’re a sweet treat and add some crunch to their meal. Save some cut up plain apple slices when you’re preparing your pie—and give them as a side to your dog’s meal. It’s important to remove all seeds and the skin, and to never feed your dog the core of the apple.
Don’t Forget the Pumpkin
Pumpkin is a superfood for dogs, and adding plain pumpkin with no additional sugars to your dog’s plate has an added benefit. Pumpkin is known for helping to soothe digestive tracts, and has a high fiber content. And because pumpkin is packed with prebiotics (essential bacteria in the stomach), it can help with overall digestive health.
Things to Keep in Mind
Don’t go crazy by overloading your dog’s plate. Share these foods with your dog in small portions and avoid ruining the day by letting them overindulge (we’ll leave that to their human counterparts).
There are foods that are off-limits during Thanksgiving, so be sure your pup doesn’t have access to these Thanksgiving staples:
- Alcohol
- Chocolate
- Fats, such as butter and turkey skin
- Mushrooms
- Nutmeg
- Onions and garlic
- Raisins
- Xylitol (check ingredient lists)
And on that note, it’s chow time! We hope you and your furry family have a safe and healthy Thanksgiving.
