A Vet’s HONEST Opinion: Is Pet Insurance Worth It

Is pet insurance worth it? Excellent question and one that dog and cat owners want to know before they get a policy.

After years of dealing with pet insurance questions and dealing with sick pets – this is my opinion as a veterinarian on pet insurance.

Let me ask you this question – do you think having homeowners insurance is worth it? If you have never had a problem with your house and never filed a claim – then the answer is probably either a “no” or “I’m not sure” or…”I like having it just in case”. If you have ever filed a claim because of a house fire and had your home almost entirely replaced – the answer is probably a “yes, it is worth it”.

The same is true for dogs. I see some pet owners have it and not need to use it which in some ways is a good thing. I see other pet owners have it and use it like crazy and really appreciate having it.

Then on the other hand – I see other pet owners not have it that really could have benefited from it. I see some dogs euthanized because the pet owner can’t afford their dog’s care.

Here is another thing to consider. Do you want to have the ability to do the best for your dog? If the answer is yes, then the next question is ….can you afford an unexpected expense such as $2,000, $4,000 or even a $10,000 vet bill if a problem were to occur? If the answer is “yes, I can afford that” then I’d say pet insurance is probably not going to pay off for you in the long run. If you say “No, I can’t afford that then I think pet insurance is worth it. There is no way to know if you will have a claim that will be more than your premiums but I believe it is worth having just in case. You never know.

Every day veterinarians euthanize pets because the owner can’t afford the treatment.

I personally believe that if you have a pet – you need to be prepared for problems and be able to have a plan to deal with them. Pet insurance is one way to do that when on a budget.
