Tip on Using Cream Cheese to Help Medicine Go Down

Here is a tip from one of our PetPlace.com users:

When I was young, we gave our Shetland sheepdog a heartworm pill every month. She wouldn't eat the pill by itself, so we would wrap it up in some sliced cheese. It didn't take long for her to realize the trick, and after that she would eat the cheese but spit out the pill.

We decided to try putting it in some cream cheese, and had success! We confirmed with our veterinarian that this was safe to do, and I have continued to do this with every dog I have had since then. The size and breed do not seem to matter, for I have also done this with a Miniature Pinscher and, more recently, a Boxer. The Boxer looks forward to her "treat", since this is the only "people food" she gets, and can get quite excited when she sees the cream cheese tub come out of the fridge!
