Make sure that you always feed a food that is formulated to meet your pet's life stage. If he is a puppy, buy a food formulated to meet the needs of your puppy. If he is an adult or senior, buy those foods.

Also, always buy a food that is AAFCO approved. This means that you choose diets that conform to minimal Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards. AAFCO regulations require that food manufacturers state on the label "Formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profile for Puppies."

Consider foods recommended by your veterinarian. They may have a recommendation based on your dogs needs.
