Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – My dog Benny has dry skin due to the dry winter air and he is itchy. I was wondering if Scalpacin would be safe to use to help relieve him of the “itchies”.

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. You asked if you could use Scalpacin on your dog’s itchy skin. According to what I read – Scalpacin® is an Anti-Itch Liquid medication used and marketed for people. From what I read – the active ingredient in this medication is hydrocortisone (1.0%).

Hydrocortisone can be used topically on dogs, however – this is a symptomatic treatment only. I’d wonder what is causing the itching. Talk to your veterinarian. I’d recommend having your vet evaluate the skin and give you a treatment recommendation that is for your dog.

A couple articles that might be helpful to you are Pruritus in Dogs and Atopy (skin allergies) in Dogs.

Best of luck!
