Collie with skin bacterial infections

Our question this week was:

I have a seven-year-old collie; she has been having recurrent skin bacterial infections, all over her body. The vet put her on antibiotics several times. While on the antibiotic she is fine but once the treatment is over she gets it back. I wash her with antibacterial shampoo. The vet wants to put her on antibiotics permanently; I do not think that would be good for her.

PLEASE HELP US!

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Recurrent skin infections are very frustrating. You are worried and are trying to figure out if long-term antibiotics are the best option. Has your vet done allergy testing too?

An article that might be helpful to you is on our Petplace.com is "Pyoderma in Dogs – Treatment"

One option to consider is seeing a veterinary dermatologist for a second opinion. You might discuss this with your veterinarian. I personally love second opinions – they don't hurt anything and may give you some new ideas or confirm your vets plan. Either way – it is a win-win if you are having any doubts.

Best of luck!
