How can I help my two-month-old Poodle puppy that is straining to defecate?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – My two-month-old Poodle puppy is straining to defecate (have a bowel movement or stool). I was able to dislodge a plug of feces, but I don't think I got it all.

We've had a lot of snow, and I'm snowed in without proper tools to dig out so I can't take snickers to the vet. Is there anything I can do to help the situation?

Hi – thanks for your email Sister Marie. You wrote that your 4-month-old pup is straining to stool. You got a plug of feces out and you are unable to get to your veterinarian at this time.

My first question is…why is he straining? Does he have diarrhea or is his stool dry? That is an important question to be answered.

Really, if you can't get to your veterinarian, all you can do is really keep him clean and dry. Encourage him to drink water. Make sure he is eating well.

I'd recommend that you try to get to your vet as soon as the weather allows.

An article that might be helpful to you is Constipation in Dogs.

Best of luck!
