Our question this week was:
My 8 yr. old male cat has developed crystals in his urinary tract. Is there a natural supplement that I can add to his food that will prevent them? The prescribed special diet is not going well as he does not care for it and is so costly.
Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote asking if there is a natural supplement safe for cats that will help stop urinary crystal development. I have not seen or read about anything that is safe and effective. Some cats are more prone to produce crystals.
Most veterinarians believe the best thing you can do is to offer PLENTY of fresh clean water. This means topping off the water bowl frequently, putting extra water bowls around the house or even using an electronic waterer fountain (some cats love these). Increasing water intake is very important for cats that form crystals. Another way to increase water production is to feed canned food. Canned food has a high percentage of water.

Best of luck!
