My dog has reverse sneezing but also seems to have a hard time breathing

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – I have a seven-year-old Chihuahua who has developed a "reverse sneezing" issue. It seems like she's trying to get her nose clear by snorting. She seems to try to breath out of her mouth, or just generally seems to have a hard time breathing. Could she have a cold?

Answer

Hi Heather – thanks for your email. I dog that is having episodes of reverse sneezing that is not caused by any underlying problem should breath normally between bouts of the sneeze.

If your dog is short of breath or having any difficulty breathing, I would consider that an emergency. Call your veterinarian or local emergency clinic.

Best of luck!
