Dr. Debra – A heavy yellow jelly-like discharging is coming out of her vagina. What is it and what do I do? She is a 10-year-old female Chihuahua/ Miniature Pincher. She has never has a litter.

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote that your 10-year-old female Chihuahua mix is having yellow vaginal discharge. I’d worry that your dog has a very serious condition called pyometra. Untreated – she could die. Take her to your veterinarian immediately.

Pyometra is an infection of the uterus that common in unsprayed older female dogs. The best treatment is to spay her.
