Pit bull puppy and new baby
Our question this week was:
Hello,
**
I have a question for you. I am thinking about getting a pit bull puppy, but I am about to have a baby son. Is it a good idea to have a baby and a pit puppy around the house?
Answer
Deciding to get a puppy (of any breed) at the same time as you are expecting a baby is quite a demand on your time. Keep in mind that training a puppy, especially one that needs socialization and obedience training like the bully breeds do takes quite a commitment of time, energy, and money.
Another issue to consider is that the pit bull is considered a restricted breed in some areas due to their capacity for dominance and aggression without proper training. It would be a good idea to check the laws in your area in regards to ownership of the breed.
With proper training and socialization the breed can be a wonderful dog, however it may be better to wait until your son is older before deciding to bring home a puppy. Shelter experts suggest children be over the age of six before introducing a new dog into a household.
