What can I do about my cocker spaniel chronic ear problem?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – I have a 10 year old cocker spaniel who has had a major problem with his ears since he was a puppy. I have taken Cody to the vet over and over for his continued ear infection. I have used dozens of recommended products, with little or no result. Once a year Cody's vet puts him under and flushes his ears. But I fear at his age, this might not be the best idea any longer. Any suggestions?

Answer

Hi Brian– thanks for your email. You wrote that your cocker spaniel has a continued ear infection. Ear infections are very frustrating and cocker spaniels frequently get them. I'd worry that his problems are a result of an underlying skin allergy.

You may talk to your vet about allergy testing, doing a hypoallergenic diet trial for a few months or seeing a dermatologist.

It may be that he needs periodic ear cultures and flushes but I'd try to get to the underlying problem if possible.

An article that might be helpful to you is Ear Infections (Otitis Externa in Dogs).

Best of luck!
