Hi Alicia– thanks for your email. Your question was – What should I do if my dog eats a CD? Well, this could be a problem. Depending on the size of your dog and how much he ate, it could be a problem. The biggest concern is that the parts of the CD could become lodged causing a "foreign body" that could require surgery.

Sometimes dogs can eat things after which we will purposely induce vomiting to get it out of their stomachs. In these cases the ingestion must be recent and inducing vomiting of that particular substance is "safe". The pieces of a CD can be sharp which makes them a little scary to vomit up.

I'd recommending calling your vet and your local emergency clinic and tell them the following:

When your dog ate it?
How much he ate?
How big he is?

…and let them help guide you on what to do. If the prices are very small, your dog may pass it on his own. Some dogs can benefit from being fed bread or something that can help bind the fragments as they migrate through the gastrointestinal tract.

An article that might be helpful to you is Gastrointestinal Foreign Body in Dogs.

Best of luck!
