Why is my dog eating our other dogs stool?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – My new little guy is eating our other dogs stool. I was told by a friend that he might be lacking vitamins. He's up to date on his vaccinations. Please help, I don't know what to do, except keep a close eye on him, even outdoors.

Thank you,

Kerrie Harter

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email Kerrie. You wrote that your dog is eating your other dogs stool. This is a common problem – that is called "Coprophagia". This is a behavioral problem and not due to a vitamin deficiency.

There is no easy solution for dogs that eat stool – as you will see in the article link below. But there are several things you can try and one of them might work for your dog.

Also, make sure he is eating a good quality balanced diet.

An article that might be helpful to you is Coprophagia in Dogs.

Best of luck!
