Why is my dog limping and in pain?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – I have a dog that is six years old and is a yellow lab. Her name is Jesse she is not heavy but not in the best shape. Since Tuesday (yesterday) she has been hopping. It seems her back right leg is bothering her and I don't know why? There is nothing stuck in between her paws or anything but she is in pain. Can you please help me?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email Andrea. You wrote that your yellow Labrador retriever is limping on her right rear leg. Andrea – there are lots of causes for limping. It can be anything from a torn nail to soft tissue injury to a fracture. Some dogs will also have hip dysplasia, arthritis as well as ligament injuries.

Without examining him – it is nearly impossible to tell. I'd recommend that you see your veterinarian to have him examined/evaluated.

Regards,

Dr. Debra

P.S. I placed links in the above text to help you read about some of the possibility causes. In addition, this general article on Limping might be useful.
