Why is my dog throwing up?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – My 5-year-old mutt is throwing up. She has done it twice today. Generally she throws up maybe…once a month. Throws up about once a week. Otherwise she seems healthy –you think this is a problem?

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote asking why is your dog throwing up twice today – and before this maybe once a month.

Is your dog showing any other signs besides throwing up such as diarrhea, weight loss, lack of appetite, or lethargy? If not – then I’d probably take up the food, offer only small amounts of water and see what happens over the next few hours. If there is no vomiting and she drinks – then feed a bland diet. Go tot his link to find out how to make it – How to Make a Bland Diet.

Try this for a few days if there is no continued vomiting or signs of illness. Then mix in the regular food.

If there is ANY concern about your dogs overall health – then I’d recommend that you see your veterinarian immediately.

Best of luck!
