Naproxen (Naprosyn®, Aleve®) for Dogs

Overview of Naproxen for Canines

Naproxen is an over-the-counter human drug, commonly known as Aleve® or Naprosyn® used to alleviate pain and inflammation humans and occasionally in dogs.
Naproxen belongs to a general class of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). Other related drugs in this class include ibuprofen and ketofen.
Naproxen, like other NSAIDs, reduces pain, inflammation and fever.
Naproxen is available over the counter but should not be administered unless under the supervision and guidance of a veterinarian.

While generally safe and effective when prescribed by a veterinarian, naproxen can cause side effects in some animals. Since the toxic level is very close to the therapeutic level in dogs and cats, it is rarely recommended in these species.
Naproxen should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug.
Naproxen should not be used in animals with known kidney, blood or liver disorders. It should not be used in animals with pre-existing stomach ulcers.
Naproxen may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with naproxen . Such drugs include aspirin, other NSAIDs, corticosteroids and furosemide.
The most common adverse effects are bleeding gastric ulcers and kidney problems in dogs and cats.
Due to the risk of gastric ulcers and kidney damage, many veterinarians will not recommend or prescribe naproxen to dogs due to the risk of toxicity. There are better alternatives available.
There is no safe dose for cats.

Naproxen is available in 100mg/ml injectable form, 8 gram packet granules, 250 mg, 375 mg and 500 mg tablets as well as 125 mg/5 ml suspension.

Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian.
If given to dogs, the dose ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 mg per pound (1 to 3 mg/kg) once daily. Most veterinarians prefer and recommend other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) that have proven to be safe and effective for dogs.
Naproxen is NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE IN CATS.
The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects. Be certain to complete the prescription unless specifically directed by your veterinarian. Even if your pet feels better, the entire treatment plan should be completed to prevent relapse.
