Mouth Rot Tips

Mouth rot is the common name used to describe mouth infections in reptiles. Incorrect cage temperatures, poor nutrition, and forced feeding predispose reptiles to mouth infections. Some early cases of mouth rot can be treated at home with twice-daily topical application of dilute iodine or chlorhexidine solution and by improving nutrition and husbandry. As the infection progresses, the reptile often seems to be in pain as it tries to eat or may refuse to eat at all. At this point, it is time to see a vet.
