Cat Kidney Food - Vet’s Advice On Cat Kidney Food

Is there a special cat kidney food?

There is a special cat kidney food. Cats with kidney disease require medical care, which includes a special cat kidney food. These cats benefit from a diet low in protein. Also, water balance is very important and encouraging water intake is often crucial. There are commercial diets for cats with kidney disease including Hill's Science Prescription Diet k/d, CNM NF-FORMULA, Eukanuba Nutritional Kidney Formulas, and IVD Modified Diets. Often the choice of diets is determined on which one your cat likes. They are all good quality foods.

A recipe published by Hill's Science Diet as a cat kidney food or food for cat with renal failure is as follows:

  • 1/4 pound lightly cooked liver (retain the fat or add 2 Tbsp of butter if none is present)
  • 2 large hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 teaspoon-full of calcium carbonate
  • 1 table
    spoon full of canola oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Morton's Nu-Salt (salt substitute)

    There are also several books on home cooking for animals that contain diets for different disease processes such as kidney disease. Books include Dr. Pitcairn's Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, by Richard Pitcairn, DVM, and Susan Pitcairn, and Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets: the Healthful Alternative by Donald R. Strombeck, DVM.

    Check with your veterinarian before feeding any cat kidney food or making a homemade cat kidney food. Your cat's blood work and chemical balance may alter the choice of ingredients.
