What dog breed is easiest to housebreak and does not shed a lot?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – I need to know which type of dog is easiest to house train and one that does not shed a lot. See, we have three cats that are not very friendly and they are outside cats so we would like to have a good housedog.

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote asking for a breed suggestion for a dog that is easy to housetrain and does not shed a lot? There are so many more questions that I have such as what size dog do you want, how much exercise do you want him or her to get, etc. I'll try to answer your question abased on that information that you gave to me. These are breeds that come to mind:

  • Standard Poodles generally don't shed much and are very smart dogs (can be easy to housebreak)
  • Bichon Frise – also smart, great lap dogs, don't shed tons, and smart
  • Maltese – cute, small, smart
  • Schnauzer – smart – need routine grooming

    Best of luck!
